Akatarawa Rd closed to through traffic 8-19 May, 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
Traffic Management will be in place to manage access for residents, there may be some delays.
Higgins Contractor's Ltd have been engaged by the Kapiti Coast District Council (KCDC) to carry out culvert, drainage and road maintenance work.
While the work is taking place in the area under the control of the KCDC, it will have an impact on road users from Upper Hutt due to the road being closed to through traffic.

Temporary Road Closure Saturday 15 July 2023
The following road will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday 15 July 2023 from 12.00pm to 10.00pm for the Matariki Ki Puanga Festival:
- Fergusson Drive, between the Blenheim Street roundabout and Wilson Street.
Temporary Road Closure Saturday 9 September 2023
The following roads will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday 9 September 2023 from 6.00 am to 5.30 pm for the 21st Annual Rimutaka Trust Spring Festival:
- Main St between Royal Street and King St.
- Wilson St from Main St to Criterion Lane.
- Pine Avenue between Main St and Queen Street.
- Lyster Lane.
- The car park on Pine Ave immediately outside Noel Leeming.
- Princes St between Main St and Geange St intersection.
- Geange St from Main St to the second pedestrian crossing just prior to the Countdown car park exit.
- Russell St between Main St and Mumby Lane.
- Wakefield St between Main St and the entrance to McDonalds.
- Logan St from Main St to, and including, the pedestrian crossing in Logan St.
There are no new road closure applications seeking approval.
From time to time a temporary road closure may be required to allow for physical road works and local events. There may be some disruption to traffic as speed is reduced while going through or next to a work site. Stop/go traffic flow will be in place where required. All work is weather dependent and time-frames may extend due to this.

Silverstream bulk water supply pipe renewal
Wellington Water are replacing the bulk water supply pipe that runs underneath the northern end of Whitemans Road and the rail line at Silverstream Train Station through to Fergusson Drive. The Silverstream bulk water supply pipe renewal will replace an old section of the pipe which has already failed once, causing significant disruption - replacing this pipe will minimise the risk of future pipe failures.
Train services won’t be affected but around 30 spaces at the Metlink carpark off Fergusson Drive and eight spaces on Gard Street are unavailable, and will be until mid-September.
Traffic management won't be required until September. There will be some stop/go and one-lane traffic management, but no full closures.

Update 14 September 2022
Alexander Road will reopen to two-way traffic at a reduced speed of 30k on Saturday 17 September.
Before that happens, drivers will notice an altered road layout on Thursday and Friday, with northbound traffic switched to the newly chip sealed lane.
Driver note - the chip seal is temporary, the final asphalt layer will be laid at the end of the project. Keeping your speed to 30k is essential to maintain the surface of the road. It also reduces the risk of loose chip flying up and hitting windscreens which can happen at higher speeds.
Update 12 September 2022
After a two week delay due to a significant amount of rain through the winter months, contractors (PCL) have confirmed they were finally able to lay the chip seal on Saturday.
They’re now working towards switching the traffic back to two-way. The crew on site have a few small tasks to complete this week before that can happen – we’ll let you know the date as soon as it’s confirmed.
It’s important to note that when the lane reopens, there is still work to be carried out and there could be some further disruption to motorists.
Key features of the new road include:
- A new roundabout and a new intersection which will tie into stage 11 of the Wallaceville development.
- A new 2.5 m cycleway and footpath on the northern side of the road
- Addition of 22 new streetlights to create light in what was otherwise a non-lit area.
- A widening of the existing road to facilitate a new flush median which will provide safe refuge for vehicles looking to turn right while other vehicles pass.
- New asphalt to replace the older existing chip seal surface.

Update 17 August 2022
This project had been delayed due to the significant rainfall over the past couple of months.
The contractors, PCL, are expecting to reopen the Southbound lane at the end of August.
Details about the remaining works will be shared closer to the time.
Update 19 July 2022
Current progress is tracking to the programme with the aim to open the road to two-way traffic 11-15 August.
Kerb work is programmed to be done this week, weather permitting.
This will be followed by the build and preparation of the road, then a two coat chip seal on the surface.
Note: This must be done in fine weather, 30k speed restrictions will stay in place to allow the chip to bed into seal properly.
Minor changes will be made to the TMP to reflect the methodology and schedule.
Major earthworks are set to begin on a section of Alexander Road (from the Ward Street roundabout to the Hopkirk Avenue roundabout) on 7 June 2022.
The southbound lane will be closed for 10-12 weeks, and a detour will be in place. The detour is shown on the map below.
Works include:
- Widening the road
- Footpaths, drainage and gutters on both sides of the road
- Streetlight installation
- Building an additional roundabout entrance to Wallaceville Estate (Dahl Drive)
- Re-paving the road

Katherine Mansfield Drive Upgrade
The first section of Katherine Mansfield Drive was upgraded and properly formed a number of years ago. Council is now working on an upgrade of the next section that was previously private land. For more information visit the Katherine Mansfield Drive Upgrade project page.
Chorus is working in Upper Hutt to rollout Ultrafast Broadband and the Rural Broadband Initiative. Fibre can deliver large amounts of data further and faster than the copper cables that traditionally deliver telecommunications services.
At least three weeks before UFB work starts in your street, residents will receive a leaflet and a letter letting you know of work coming up and the impact on your area.
When Chorus has finished laying fibre in your street you need to contact a telecommunications service provider to order a UFB-based service. They place an order with Chorus who will then organise a suitable time to come to your home and connect you to the new fibre network.
You should talk to your current service provider first. If they have not launched their UFB-based products use the link in the Resource & Links section to find out where you can get UFB based services from.
Chorus has a new Rollout and Service Availability Map which shows you the first three years UFB rollout and five years of RBI, including rural schools. This means you can check on the progress of their planned network upgrades, including UFB and RBI, and find out what services are available to you.
