The double-tracked section of rail line between Trentham and Upper Hutt became operational today as part of Kiwi Rail’s work to improve the Hutt Valley Line.

Double-tracking the rail line allows trains to travel in both directions at once, supporting a more efficient Wairarapa service and helping minimise delays.

This follows the opening of a new underpass at Trentham Station on 10 November which was blessed by Kaumātua Matiu Jennings at a dawn ceremony.

Mayor Guppy was in attendance, along with about 35 others. Attendance was scaled back due to level two COVID restrictions.

The underpass is lined with artwork produced by Trentham School students which was unveiled by Remutaka MP Hon Chris Hipkins on 12 November. The murals sit alongside heritage photos which have been installed in the underpass.
