Upper Hutt’s much-loved annual Santa Parade is taking a year off, due to the restrictions and continued uncertainty with COVID-19, and will be replaced with smaller Christmas festivities in the city.

Current Alert Level 2 restrictions do not permit us to run the event on Main Street, which can attract over 5,000 people. There is also no confirmed date on an alert level shift or move to the new COVID-19 Protection Framework, which means we have had to cancel the parade to ensure we keep our community safe.

We’re making this call now in fairness to the community groups who work tirelessly to create floats, and our committed group of volunteers who give their time. We’d like to thank the organisations who have already registered for the event. For any group who has started building their floats, we’ll keep The Magic of Christmas theme for 2022 to ensure your efforts are still put to use.

In place of the parade, we have a range of other exciting festivities being planned now to celebrate the festive season. These include small pop-up events, Christmas flags, window displays, and some great giveaways.
