Red alert toxic algae warning

Published on 14 January 2022

Swimmers and people with dogs are still encouraged to stay out of water in the Hutt River near Silverstream, from Moonshine Bridge to upstream of Taita Rock. We are also advising caution at 3 more sites in the area:

  • Pakuratahi River Forks at Kaitoke
  • Hutt River at Birchville
  • Hutt River at Poets Park

There is currently a red alert toxic algae warning in place for Hutt River from Moonshine Bridge down to upstream of Taita Rock (not including Taita Rock) due to high levels of toxic algae. Swimmers and people with dogs should avoid the area until this warning is lifted.

Toxic algae can make people sick and is deadly to dogs. If you have been in contact with toxic algae and are feeling unwell see your doctor or ring Healthline 0800 611 116. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet immediately.
