To celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and seventy years of service to the Commonwealth, we’ve planted a Copper Beech tree in Central Upper Hutt in a ceremony officiated by Mayor Guppy.

The ceremony took place earlier today in the green space in front of Upper Hutt Train Station, and Mayor Guppy turned the sod and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

Mayor Guppy said: “We wanted to celebrate the occasion with a tree that will not only commemorate the occasion but celebrate a remarkable woman. The tree will also enhance our urban environment and benefit future generations of Upper Hutt”.

A Copper Beech Tree was selected for its strong English heritage and it’s regal colouring with purple leaves, which in autumn, turns a copper gold colour. The Queen and Prince Charles planted the same variety at Balmoral Castle in 2021.
