Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities have confirmed an agreement to purchase 4 three-bedroom homes and 5 four-bedroom homes in Upper Hutt from DMST International Ltd. The purchase aligns with Council’s Affordable Housing Strategy which aims to provide a growing population with adequate, affordable housing that meets their needs.

Development of the 4 three-bedroom homes in 1 Huia Grove, Elderslea began in January 2023 and is due to be completed September 2023. Development of the 5 four-bedroom homes at 1 Hood Avenue, Heretaunga begins in March 2023 and is due to be completed October 2023 (this development is subject to resource consent approval).

Council Chief Executive Peter Kelly said:

“The purchase will deliver urgently needed long-term warm and dry housing for our whānau most in need of a place to call home. Adequate housing supports social, environmental, economic, and cultural wellbeing, and everyone deserves to live and thrive in a warm, dry home.”

The new homes will be fully insulated with carpets, curtains, and double glazing, with one or two car parks each.

Tenants will be matched to the new homes from the Ministry of Social Developments Housing Register, with the highest priority for a home of that size and in that location.

Upper Hutt is projected to experience annual growth of 2% over the next 30 years, requiring 10,000 new homes.
