A new sealed carpark is being constructed in the green space opposite the Civic Centre and Whirinaki Whare Taonga, next to the VTNZ building. This will address the problems and the damage currently arising from vehicles using the space for all day parking, particularly in winter.
The new carpark will provide 72 parking spaces, and the existing gravel area behind the Longhorn Bar will continue to be available for parking. Access to the parking will continue to be off Criterion Lane. The remaining grassed area will be levelled using the topsoil removed from the area under construction, and will be fenced off to protect it from damage in the future.
The work will also include: constructing a new pedestrian link between Fergusson Drive and Criterion Lane; protection of the significant trees; some landscaping and gardens; and power outlets to allow the space to potentially be used for other events and activities on the weekend.
The contract to develop the area has been awarded to local Upper Hutt contractor, Sierra Delta Civil Limited. Work is expected to take around eight weeks, although this will depend on the weather.
More information on parking in the city centre, including a map and information on Accessible Parking, can be found on our Parking in Upper Hutt page.
