Council engaged with college students to discuss future employment

Yesterday our Council team attended the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce youth employment event aimed at inspiring local college students to consider employment opportunities within council and Hutt Valley. The team spent the morning at YMCA Upper Hutt, speaking with students, school career advisors and teachers from colleges in Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt about the range of career paths available to youth within council after they graduate.
The event was a great success, with students and school staff showing significant interest in the opportunities on offer. Many expressed surprise at the range of different roles available, and how diverse the Council's workforce was. Staff members were able to provide information on the qualifications, skills and experience that were required for the different entry positions within the Council.
"We were thrilled to be able to collaborate with Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and the local colleges to inspire the next generation of council staff," said Mike Ryan, Director of Community Services. “By engaging with young people and encouraging them to think about their futures, we hope to shape the next generation of council staff to consider the various career paths that are available to them within Council."
The event was attended by Marija Martinovich and Isobel Davis from Upper Hutt Libraries, Brent Hayward, Hamish Leckie and Gordon Hardman from Recreation Services, and Whero West and Sole Moyano from Community Development. As well as giving students valuable career advice, the team members found the experience incredibly rewarding and enjoyed engaging with young people and encouraging them to think about their futures.
Students left the event feeling more informed and inspired about their future careers. We are committed to investing in the workforce and look forward to collaborating with Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and our local colleges again to inspire the next generation of council staff.
