Applications are open for the Climate Action Fund, a new initiative by Wellington Community Trust.

This fund is being established to support climate action groups for local initiatives that move the Wellington region towards carbon neutrality.

Grants range in size from $100,000 to $1m, with a total pool of $2m, open to organisations and charities in Upper Hutt, Kāpiti, Porirua, Wellington and Lower Hutt. Applicants can request multi-year funding for up to three years.

While we as a council can’t apply for grants on our own, we can apply as part of a coalition or partnership application, and endorse organisations applications, as long as at least one of the organisations has a charitable purpose.

So we’re on the hunt for community groups, charity organisations, social enterprises, schools and private consultants that we can partner with on a joint application, and potentially take an Upper Hutt-wide approach to support our Sustainability Strategy and our commitment to be a carbon neutral organisation by 2035.

We’re keen to meet with groups as soon as we can to align activities to the strategy and to complete funding applications. Particularly, we’re interested in:

  • Waste reduction (food waste)
  • Community resilience (food security/production)
  • Biodiversity (science education)

Expressions of interest are open until 11 November.
