Refuse/recycle
All householders (urban and rural) in Upper Hutt have the availability of a weekly household kerbside refuse and recyclables collection service.For business in the Central Business District of the City a bi-weekly service is available being Tuesday and Friday mornings. This also includes the maintenance of street litterbins.
Public holiday collections
Refuse and recycling will be collected on all statutory holidays where these fall on a weekday,except:
- Good Friday
- Christmas Day
- New Years Day
On these three days refuse and recycling will be collected on the following day, except where
Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Years Day fall on a Friday where refuse will be collected
on the preceding day.
Rubbish bags
The refuse collection service is funded by a user pays system where by the contractor providesCouncil specified refuse bags which are bought by the users from retail outlets as and when
required. Upper Hutt City Council rubbish bags are coloured green and can be purchased from
local supermarkets and dairies.
Silverstream landfill
Urban household and central city waste and recycling collection services are carried out bycontract. Local people and businesses are able to use the Silverstream Landfill on Reynolds Bach
Drive, which is owned by the Hutt City Council but jointly operated on behalf of Hutt City and
Upper Hutt City Councils.

Solid Waste Bylaw 2005
The purpose of this bylaw is to ensure that refuse is collected and disposed of in the interests ofpublic health and to ensure that any obstruction of streets is kept to a minimum.
