Growing Old Living Dangerously
If you are over the age of 50 and want to get out, be active & experience life, then GOLD might be just what you are looking for.
GOLD (Growing Old Living Dangerously) is a programme that originated in Brisbane as part of the push to get people more active. The Brisbane programme successfully challenges the notions of age appropriate activities and offers activities that have included abseiling, a high ropes course, roller blading, sea kayaking, tai chi, bushwalks and horseback trail riding.
The program seeks to teach new skills and enhance or revive existing ones by offering activities which present a physical or intellectual challenge to a group of people who may in the past have been offered little else but bowls and bingo.
One of the obvious benefits that Queensland has over Wellington is the consistent good weather which makes these activities more appropriate for this age group, but here in Upper Hutt we are trying to bring this programme alive through offering a range of ‘not so ordinary’ opportunities for the older adult.
Every second month we aim to provide an opportunity to have a go at something that is available in the Hutt Valley. This month sees a visit to Silverstream driving range where there will be some technical people on hand to give you some guidance and other members of the group there to give you some support!
Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before or if you’re a bit rusty, it’s a chance to meet new people and get acquainted with different activities that are within easy distance of where you live. So far we have done some kayaking (in the pool), Archery and Shooting. On the agenda for this year we have rock climbing, Scuba diving and Go Karting to name just a few.
If you would like to know more about this programme or sign up for any of the activities contact Cherry Downing, Active Communities Coordinator on telephone (04) 903-4715 or via email.
