Under the New Zealand Copyright Act 1994 material is protected for different periods of time according to format.  A copy of the Act is available on The Knowledge Basket website.

Effort has been made to check the copyright for images made on this database.  However anyone wanting to publish or distribute materials found in these collections is responsible for determining copyright and following any restrictions put on the material.

We understand the nature of historical archival collections means that copyright may be difficult or even impossible to determine.  In these circumstances the Library will accept a letter in which you accept responsibility for publishing an item for which you have not been able to clear copyright and outlining the steps that you have taken to determine and clear copyright.  Note that this does not give you indemnity.
