Activation
About Activation
Activation is a project implemented by the Upper Hutt City Council
to assist the community to become more active more often. The
framework for this plan is the Upper Hutt Active Recreation Plan
(UHARP) adopted by council in November 2006 and supported and funded by
the 4 project partners, Upper Hutt City Council, SPARC, Youthtown and
Sport Wellington Region.
A small team has been brought together to assist and lead the
community in becoming more active, more often. The Activation team
will be working with community groups and individuals to develop and
support physical activity in the city by implementing the active
recreation plan. The plan has many interventions from people starting
to explore options for active recreation to those that excel in their
area of choice.
The role of the Activation team is to:
- support clubs and groups to provide physical activity and sport services.
- connect groups together and create networks to enhance physical activity.
- provide advice and create awareness about events and programmes.
- assist with the development and delivery of programmes and events.
- advocate for physical activity opportunities.
- monitor and evaluate physical activity in the city.
Explore 2 Excel
The explore to
excel continuum lies at the heart of the Upper Hutt Activation Plan and
describes the different phases that people partake in sport and active
recreation. E2E (Explore to Excel) is about encouraging people to
explore, learn, participate, perform and excel.
Explore
At one time or another everyone has been at the
explore phase. A new activity or sport catches your attention and you
want give it a go to see what is involved and what is required.
Learn
The next phase in the continuum is learning the basic
skills required to participate in the activity. You may go along to a
session or two or speak to someone involved in the activity and sign up
to lessons or a course.
Participate
In this phase you are able to take part in an
activity with some competence and confidence. Participation a key
phase, it is when you start to enjoy your new activity, turning up at
each session looking forward to what’s in store.
Perform
You enter the perform phase when you have mastered the
basic skills and tactics of the activity. Performing at a chosen
activity takes a little more commitment and having participated and
experienced your activity it may be time to push a little further.
Excel
To excel at your given activity means you can perform to
a high level of competence. It doesn’t have to mean competing in
national events, it simply means excelling for you, doing the best that
you can do. It will give you the chance to shine and surpass any
preconceived ideas of what you were capable of. For some people this
will be a gold medal at the Olympics for others it will mean completing
a 10km walk.
