Business Development Assistance
Upper Hutt City Council takes a lead role in facilitating local business support. A full-time Director of Business Services co-ordinates Council activities and develops business-friendly programmes aimed at encouraging new businesses into Upper Hutt and helping existing business to succeed.
The Council is an active and proud supporter of the business community, demonstrated by annual events such as the City’s Business Excellence Awards.
Many services are available to people wanting to start, develop or relocate their business to Upper Hutt.
Rates Relief Policy
Upper Hutt City Council operates a rates relief policy which is designed to encourage business to either establish a new business or expand their current operations within our City. Click here for further details on this policy.
Positively Wellington Business - is an economic development agency, partly funded by our Council, and offers guidance on how to start up a business, get advice, training programmes etc.
www.biz.org.nz - this business portal has been designed and written with the needs of small to medium sized businesses in mind and includes easy to understand information on tax and employing staff, health and safety, training, finance, good business practice, exporting and growing your business.
Upper Hutt Chamber of Commerce - aims to influence the environment in which businesses operate and provide opportunities, products and services that will improve the success and vitality of your business. The Chamber also runs a large number of free business training seminars.

Consents and Licenses
Depending on what activities you have planned, you may also need a Resource Consent or Building Consent from Council. You may also need an Environmental Health Licence to Operate certain types of businesses, e.g. food premises, hairdresser, etc.
