Business in our City
City Design and Planning
With an additional 1000 residential dwellings built since 2001 Upper Hutt City is one of the fastest growing areas in the Wellington Region.
Upper Hutt City Council is committed to ensuring that growth in the city happens in a planned and sustainable way that allows new and existing businesses to develop and grow, ensures that people have a quality environment to live in, and the uniqueness of the city is retained.
Planning for growth
- The District Plan sets out policies and rules to manage the city's natural and physical environment. A number of proposed changes to this plan are underway
- We are developing an Urban Growth Strategy that will enable the city to enjoy future development. At the same time Upper Hutt residents will continue to enjoy the the relaxed lifestyle our urban and rural mix brings together.
The Upper Hutt City Urban Growth Strategy has a focus on managing development over the next ten to twenty years, not only to meet our immediate needs but also those of the community for the next twenty to fifty years and beyond.
Ultimately the Urban Growth Strategy will guide decision making to ensure that our growth is well integrated, affordable and sustainable. It includes growth in urban areas and will identify parts of the city that are suitable for more intensive development because they are located next to railway stations and major transport routes.
The Strategy will also look to strengthen existing business locations by growing and expanding the range of activities that can establish within the central city, and to encourage consolidation of activities in existing business areas throughout the city. It will also identify new locations where industrial and business development may establish in the future.
