Youthtown Urban Unity 2010 Urban Unity - The Grind is back! And more CHILL!

In 2010 Urban Unity (Youthtown) will be running two programmes continuously throughout the year.  The Grind will run on the last Wednesday of every month and will be held at the Ascot Cinema Cafe, thanks to the great team there being so open and welcoming of young people!

This programme was initiated by Council and was a pilot programme in 2007.  Urban Unity will now take on this project and relaunch it for the year of 2010.  There has been a welcoming response from the music teachers from all of the colleges which is a great start!  The second programme will be Chill, and that will run here at Youthtown every first Friday of the month.(see poster below).  Chill was trialled earlier this year and will become a permanent fixture now as the feedback was positive and it’s also a known fact that young people need some places to hang in a safe and cool environment here in Upper Hutt.

The Urban Unity squad will continue to do a great job as they have done this year.  We said farewell to our two 7th Formers. More recruits are lined up for 2010 and the squad will boosted to a 12 person team.  Can’t wait!!

Our dance parties will continue next year with one each term, a set of workshops will be introduced per term which will look at things like Skateboarding for Beginners, Make-Up Artistry and Audio Engineering.  These workshops are also a new concept, but something that has been a great success for the new Taupo branch of Youthtown.

What is the Urban Unity Squad?

Urban Unity is made up of young people between the ages of 13 - 18 who want to make a difference in their youth communities. We organise and run events and activities out of local Youthtown centres.  Belonging to the Urban Unity is an awesome opportunity to hone those leadership skills lurking inside you dying to get out!   We have great partnerships with Youthline and the YMCA to make sure you get all the support you need. But being a part of Urban Unity is not all work - you get to network and socialise with other young people who are involved in other youth programmes within the Wellington region.
