Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy encourages residents to look for further information about regional governance options as the debate continues.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 22 MAY 2013—Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy, is calling for residents of the Wellington region to demand more transparent information about options for regional governance as consultation outcomes suggest a lack of understanding and manipulation.   “The public have a right to have a say and I support the Greater Wellington Regional Council alliance working party undertaking consultation,” says Mayor Guppy. “The issue with this process is that the line of questioning was misleading by not presenting all possible options, therefore manipulating people into selecting one of the two supercity models promoted by the alliance.”   Mayor Guppy also notes that the release of a separate survey conducted by Wellington City Council contradicts the results of the Greater Wellington Regional Council working party’s online consultation. “The two surveys conducted simultaneously clearly show discrepancies, suggesting the process is flawed. The process of consultation should not be confusing, and all parties have a duty to provide residents information about all of the options on the table. They need to fully understand the benefits and consequences of each option before reaching a decision.”   Mayor Guppy believes that the alliance (led by Greater Wellington Regional Council, including Porirua City Council, Kapiti Coast District Council, and Wellington City Council) and the group within that are specifically pushing for a supercity, are unduly influencing the consultation process by preventing robust consultation and releasing misleading results.   “Let’s not fog these results. Let the people of the Wellington region understand that if the Alliance is going to use these consultation results then they should be clear that they have been manipulated. The public were asked if they want a super city – a super city of one tier, or a super city with two. They received no choice about enhanced shared services across councils’; No choice about the creation of multiple unitary authorities; No choice about the status quo!   “There was clearly no choice – (the survey) was just based simply on a supercity option. To then have the audacity to say that x amount of people supported it – is dishonest!   “Robust consultation is essential in this important process and the views of residents should be informed, honest and transparent. The processes currently employed by this Alliance are effectively taking away the voice of its residents and steering them blindly into a governance structure that they may not necessarily support.”   “I agree that improving the governance of the Wellington region will be one of many things that will propel Wellington forward, but we must first ensure that our people are correctly informed.  They should not be bullied or steered.  It should be the communities who decide who will govern our region, not the ideologies of certain politicians”.   Starting on 28 May 2013, the Upper Hutt City Council will begin its second round of public consultation over options of local governance, in collaboration with the Hutt City Council. Mayor Guppy assures his residents that their processes will be fair.   “It is important that residents are given information on all options and the benefits and impacts of these on their community. All residents of the Wellington region deserve the opportunity to make a fully informed, democratic decision.”   Background Of the 800 people surveyed by Colmar Brunton in 2012, 71% Upper Hutt residents and 61% Lower Hutt residents indicated they wanted to remain the same or no boundary changes with more shared services. Of the 33% in Upper Hutt who indicated they wanted some change 46% wanted a combined Hutt Valley Council. Of the 39% in Lower Hutt who indicated they wanted some change 38% wanted a combined Hutt Valley Council.   Further consultation within Upper Hutt received 1409 submissions. Media release | Thursday, 16 May 2013 Hutt Valley’s two city councils will ask residents for their views on the future of regional governance in a combined consultation beginning on Tuesday 28 May.

City Mayors, Ray Wallace, Lower Hutt, and Wayne Guppy, Upper Hutt, in a joint statement today say they want to ensure accurate information about possible future options are shared with communities in the Valley.   “We have always worked closely together and we believe our people should have an opportunity to air their views about any future local government reform. “Both our councils were told in polls last year that the majority of residents wanted the status quo to remain with more shared services and, if forced into an amalgamation, a united Hutt Valley was the next preferred choice. “We will put out the options of the enhanced status quo model, a United Hutt Valley Council, or a single council for the Wellington region, in a bid to get a clear direction on the preferences of our communities within the Hutt Valley,” they say. A website www.yourvoiceyourchoice.org.nz will remain open through to Friday 14 June. “Our view has been and will continue to be that we will listen to the voice of the communities we serve and then make decisions about whether or not submissions will be made to the Local Government Commission. “This is a time for our communities to stand together with a shared voice to ensure we have a say in our own future,” they say.   Both councils will also use the results of the Colmar Brunton telephone survey conducted last year and run a second survey alongside this current consultation. “It is important we have a strong and robust statement about what our communities think,” they say. Upper Hutt author Cat Connor, is launching her latest book ‘Soundbyte’ at Upper Hutt’s Central Library on Friday 17 May.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 16 MAY 2013—Local author Cat Connor, will provide a sneek peek into her latest book in the ‘Byte’ series, ‘Soundbyte’ at Upper Hutt City Library next Friday night. Open to the public, the launch will commence at 7.00 pm on Friday 17 May. Media release | Friday, 3 May 2013 Maidstone Park Sports Centre officially opened

Upper Hutt Mayor,Wayne Guppy, together with Rex Manning and Peter Thomas officially opened the Maidstone Park Sports Centre at a ceremony held in the facility’s clubrooms last night.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 03 MAY 2013—A significant turnout of invited guests crowded into the renovated Maidstone Park Pavilion last night to take part in the official opening of what has been named the ‘Maidstone Park Sports Centre’. The event comes at the conclusion of the first two phases of development of Maidstone Park, and a significant project that will benefit the community of Upper Hutt and the whole Wellington region.   Beginning in December 2011, the Maidstone Park development project saw the installation of two artificial turfs laid adjacent to each other on the grounds opposite the pavilion clubrooms. The turfs differ significantly in size and turf substrate with one sand based pitch catering for hockey and the other sand and rubber based pitch, for rugby and soccer. The turfs were designed and are certified to international standards. The first hockey game was played on its turf in May 2012 and the soccer/rugby pitch has now been open since February this year.   Also included in the project were a small artificial practice area, car parking, and renovation of the pavilion—including the changing facilities and toilets, the addition of a tuck shop, and the clubrooms upstairs.   In his speech, Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy highlighted the longevity of the project from its inception three years ago and paid respect to those involved for their vision and determination to see it to this point of completion. Chris Upton, Council’s Chief Executive, noted that this may not be the end of the project, citing Council’s Long Term Plan which includes a possible “phase 3” development of an additional rugby/soccer turf and tennis/netball courts.   Maidstone Park Trust Chair, Peter Thomas also spoke. Mr. Thomas thanked Council for its support of the project and in particular the Mayor and Mr. Upton for their vision of what the facility could be over and above the initial ideas proposed for a “flood-lit field for soccer practice.” He also noted the further addition of a viewing deck for the pavilion was now in for consent at Council. The facility’s usage is now booked through the trust. The facility has great potential to host not only sporting events, but also community events and encourages interested groups to get in touch.   Funders the National Hockey Stadium Trust, Lion Foundation, and Wellington Community Trust were thanked for their contribution to the project. Of particular note was support from the Pelorus Trust who saw the vision for the project and was able to make the most significant contribution to the project. The full calendar of events for Youth Week 2013 has just been released and it promises to be a great week of free, fun events for young people aged 12 – 24 yrs.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 MAY 2013—Youth Week 2013 is almost here and there are plenty of events happening in Upper Hutt to celebrate young people. Youth Week is from 4 – 12 May and the theme for this year is “Live like a Legend!  ” “Everyone involved has put in a great deal of thought and effort to make this one of the most successful Youth Weeks ever held in Upper Hutt, however we now need your support and energy to make it so”, says Steve Smith, Council’s Acting Senior Community Development Advisor.   Youth Week in Upper Hutt will kick off at Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre with a performance by New Zealand’s six-time Beat Boxing Champion and world record holder for the longest individual beat box, King Homeboy. “So come on over for a hands-on workshop, grab a mic and hit the beats”, says Leanne Wickham, Expressions Director.   The library is running a writing competition, titled ‘Who is your Legend?’ Young people are being asked to write a short story (no more than 1500 words) about someone who inspires them and that they consider a legend; it could be a sport or community personality or even a family member. “Look to the legends of the past to inspire you to be a legend in the present,” says Danny Tiata, Upper Hutt City Library’s Children’s and Teens’ Specialist. Entries can be dropped off at the library or emailed to cteens@uhcc.govt.nz. Participants should include their name, age, and contact details. Entries are due by Sunday 12 May and winners will be announced Monday 13 May.   The Ascot Cinema is offering special deals to young people aged 16 – 24 years. All tickets are only $10, plus an extra $2 for 3D. Identification is required.   The Xtream Activation Trailer and the Inflatable Gladiator game will be visiting local high schools at lunchtime during Youth Week. Fun, social sports opportunities will be provided by Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team. Students are advised to check their school’s daily notices.   For the ninth year running, the 2013 Upper Hutt Young Achiever Awards will be held Tuesday 7 May at Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre. The awards recognise our local young people who have achieved in the areas of Culture, Service, & Leadership. A Mayoral award will also be presented. Nominees and their supporters will be invited to attend.   A one-day Future Dragons style workshop for invited year 12 – 13 students is to take place on Wednesday 8 May at the Ascot. At the end of the day students will understand the basics of entrepreneurship and business start-up, supply and demand, marketing, and marketing techniques. Successful Upper Hutt business people will provide inspiration and insight through their business experience.   A brand new programme, titled ‘TLC (Thursday Library Club)’ will be launched Thursday 9 May from 11.00 am – 12.00 pm, for physically and intellectually disabled youngsters. This is an awesome opportunity for young people aged between 15 – 24 years to enjoy interactive story time, poetry, crafts, and music at their local library. Following the launch, TLC will take place fortnightly on a Thursday.   H2O Xtream is hosting “Sports Legends”, with ‘The Edge’, on Friday 10 May from 7.00 – 10.00 pm. There will be competitions, loads of prizes, free slides, a free sausage sizzle, and a live DJ. No tickets are needed and all ages welcome. Normal pool entry applies.   Lastly but not least is ‘Youth Day Out’, Saturday 11 May, 11.00am – 5.00 pm, Railway Ave, Upper Hutt. Youthtown, Upper Hutt Baptist, Christian Fellowship, Collision, Vibe, and Orongomai Marae have come together to provide a day full of great activities  for young people aged 12 – 24 years. There will be graf art, live music, a human gyroscope, a dodge ball tournament, a live art performance, activities with the radio station, a pool competition, and a sausage sizzle. Trentham School pupils win Apple i-Pod Shuffles in the recent art competition run by Upper Hutt City Council.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 24 APR 2013—Four talented artists from Trentham School took out the competition themed ‘the best thing about Trentham’ on Friday 19 April. Upper Hutt City Council, in partnership with the Trentham Community House Charitable Trust, gave students of Trentham, St Brendon’s and Fergusson Intermediate School an opportunity to enter. In total, there were 66 entries and all from Trentham School.   Children were given the time in class to enjoy discussions with their teachers about the community house and their mission statement ‘woven strong to be purposeful and resilient’. They also discussed what they thought was the best thing about their community.   The winners of each age category were Morgan Partridge, Fekelwap Tuuina, Precious Tekura and Rivernetta Hunt. All winners received a certificate, goody bag and an Apple i-Pod Shuffle at their Friday morning assembly in recognition of their creativity and effort.   “The best thing about this, is all the children at the assembly were so proud and excited for the four winners, what a warm and caring school community. Engagement with children in this area has been one of the key aspects in building resilience in the local neighbourhood and with the establishment of the community house” Jessica Setu said, Acting Senior Adviser for Community Development. Media release | Wednesday, 24 April 2013 New victim support service coordinator impressed by dedication of volunteers

Six months into her role, Upper Hutt’s new Victim Support Service Coordinator is still excited about assisting people in the community she lives in.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 24 APR 2013—Melissa Gordon was appointed as Upper Hutt’s Victim Support Service Coordinator late last year, after more than a year in the Lower Hutt office.   Melissa has great admiration for the volunteers who attend scenes of serious crime and other trauma. Once recruits from the March intake are trained, there will be nine Victim Support volunteers in Upper Hutt.   “It’s a humbling experience working with our selfless group of volunteers. These are everyday Kiwis doing extraordinary things. Two of them have been serving for over twenty years. It really doesn't feel like work when you are alongside people like this!” says Melissa.   “Our volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We attend anything from a burglary or neighbourhood disputes to serious assaults, homicides and fatal motor vehicle accidents, usually alongside the Police. We aim to be there within 45 minutes,” says Melissa.   “My first priority is to make sure victims receive a high quality service. We are passionate about people affected by crime and trauma – we help them to restore control in their lives. We do this by attending the scene and assisting with the immediate aftermath, then right through to the judicial process, and advocating on their behalf.”   “I am passionate about looking after our precious volunteers,” says Melissa. “I keep an open relationship with each of them to ensure they are OK. We make sure they are safe if they are out attending a job and debrief with them after each event.”   Melissa’s work with volunteers starts with recruiting the right people. “We have a robust recruitment procedure followed by three days of intense training. There are only two training sessions per year, the next one for the Wellington district being in October.”   “After initial training, volunteers have monthly meetings to keep up to date with issues like amendments to the legislation governing victims’ rights, court processes and developments in grief and trauma management. Recently we held training at Orongomai Marae for the first time, which was a fantastic experience,” says Melissa.   An independent charitable trust, Victim Support has offices in 65 locations throughout New Zealand. There are over 1000 volunteers nationwide and 140 paid staff. Upper Hutt Victim Support is part of the Wellington District which has six offices in the Lower North Island.    Victim Support’s Service Coordinators are based in Police Stations, but they operate independently.   “We receive the majority of our referrals through Police but are not limited to this,” says Melissa. “People can call the 0800 line themselves and other agencies sometimes call us on someone's behalf.” Victim Support’s freephone is 0800 VICTIM (0800 843 846).   Melissa is also working on building relationships with other organisations to inform them of what Victim Support is all about.   “A huge focus for me this year is raising our profile. We provide presentations for clubs and organisations like Probus and 60's Up,” says Melissa. “We are happy to talk to anyone that wants to know what we are about. And I am at the Upper Hutt Library twice a month in the "Hot Seat" to answer questions and assist people.”   Upper Hutt City Council’s Director of Community Services, Andrea Curtis, says Victim Support is an integral part of the city’s Safe Hutt Valley initiative and Melissa’s perspective is crucial.   “No matter how safe our community becomes, there will always be a need for Victim Support. Despite suggested perceptions of the Wellington economy, the region has a lot to feel positive about.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 23 APR 2013—Recent news that Wellington is perceived as ‘difficult to deal with’ by central Government is refuted by Upper Hutt City Council, who asks that residents of the region feel confident that they are part of a successful vibrant region.   There is a lot to feel good about when you are a part of the Wellington region,” says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “The region has been hit just as hard as any other by the economic turbulence of the global recession. What makes us so resilient has been our agility in these difficult times. This is reflected in areas of growth throughout the region.”   The report that sparked the debate about the relationship between central and local Government provides statistics about the economic performance of the Wellington region. The report, prepared by Infometrics, and offers comprehensive data and compares the regions performance against other comparative centres and previous year’s performance.   “It seems that Greater Wellington Regional Council has been too quick to release important data from this report out of context.” says Mayor Guppy. “While some of the statistics they have released may be relevant to issues most topical at this time (such as house prices, economic growth, and employment growth), without the correct context the economic stability of the entire region is undermined. Data showing a stagnating economy is only a reflection of worldwide trends. There have been significant shifts in our local economy as business and industry recover from the recession, and some sectors (like central Government) have contracted while others have expanded.”   Wellington has experienced significant growth in areas of media and telecommunications, screen and digital, clean technology and business services. All of these sectors are performing well above the national average. Manufacturing has grown by 8.1%, far above the national average of 2%; and our export growth is more than double the national average. Homes are becoming more affordable, and people are becoming more confident.   “Some of the statistics in this report have been released at the convenience of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.” says Mayor Guppy “This has provided an ill thought-out example of assumed impacts of the current local governance model across the region. If you can see beyond the propaganda of the Greater Wellington Regional Council, you will see a region that is evolving, adapting to a changing economy, and a resilient community of highly skilled and well rewarded employees.   The relationship that the Wellington community has with each of its local Councils ensures that their unique needs are met, in a way that a supercity simply cannot match. If central Government wants to liaise with one representative from the region I know we can be mature enough to implement a system to manage such relationships without the need to completely overhaul our governance structure. It is unrealistic to assume that amalgamation will transform the local economy. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 22 APR 2013—One year into her role, Safe Hutt Valley Coordinator Haydee Wilton is looking ahead to even more successful initiatives.   “There’s no doubt that the Safe Hutt Valley initiative has been successful,” says Haydee. “There’s been a 12.9% drop in crime in the Hutt Valley over the last year. That means 1,800 fewer victims of crime. The Police believe this reduction has been achieved through collaboration among the full range of agencies, and that’s what Safe Hutt Valley is all about.”   Haydee says there have been solid success stories in Upper Hutt. The injury prevention programme and the alcohol-free schools initiative that kicked off the Safe Hutt Valley initiative are still going strong.   “There’s a huge amount happening,” says Haydee. “In injury prevention, free Vitamin D supplements have been distributed to older people living in residential care. We’re rolling out the SAY Now programme, developed by the Alcohol and Liquor Advisory Council. This involves working with officials from sports clubs to reduce alcohol related harm. Top Trentham is under way, with neighbourhood events, community clean-ups and home safety audits.”   “In road safety, our work focuses on safety at intersections, alcohol and drug impaired driving, young drivers, child restraints, and motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. We have a local Youth Offending Teams, part of a nationwide network set up to encourage agencies to work together to identify local issues and solve problems. The Hutt Valley team is currently focussing on truancy.”   “I’ve been impressed by the genuine neighbourhood engagement in Upper Hutt,” says Haydee. “It’s important that community involvement is seen as something to be applauded. Upper Hutt’s involvement in Neighbours’ Day Aotearoa is a good example. “Dob in your neighbour!” is one way of acknowledging people who go out of their way to do something positive for their neighbourhood.”   As the Safe Hutt Valley initiative’s first permanent coordinator, Haydee has been working to build on the fruitful relationships developed over the previous five years. “Our focus areas continue to follow the strategy developed in 2011 with injury prevention, crime and crash prevention, and alcohol harm minimisation being our main work streams.”   Hutt Valley-born, Haydee has strong experience in managing relationships and processes with both government and non-government agencies, usually in funding and project management roles. She worked for Internal Affairs, Culture and Heritage and the Historic Places Trust before taking up her current position.   Based at Hutt City but responsible for the whole Hutt Valley, Haydee feels positive about progress, especially following the recent release of statistics that indicate people have a high level of comfort about their safety in Upper Hutt.   “Upper Hutt City Council’s surveys are valuable tools in setting priorities for the Safe Hutt Valley initiative. It’s important that we understand where our communities feel safe and where they don’t. That gives us a strong basis for us to evaluate existing programmes and adjust future priorities,” she says.   “Last year’s Safety Survey showed that almost everyone feels safe most of the time at home and in their neighbourhood. It’s when they venture outside that comfort zone they start to feel less at ease. So the Police and Upper Hutt City Council know how to prioritise resources.”   The Safe Hutt Valley Coordinator position was established in 2012 to build on the considerable achievements already made. Haydee says her job is to help integrate and develop community safety initiatives in the wider Hutt Valley area.   “It’s crucial to maintain links across community agencies to support the development of a strong safety culture in our cities,” says Haydee. “Having a permanent coordinator creates a single point of contact for people wanting help or offering to contribute. It also means we have someone to lead our reapplication for accreditation as an International Safe community.”   Formed in late 2008, the Safe Hutt Valley initiative helped Hutt Valley gain accreditation as an International Safe Community from the World Health Organisation in 2010. Safe Hutt Valley’s partners include Upper Hutt City Council, Hutt City Council, the Police, ACC, Hutt Valley DHB, Regional Public Health, Child Youth and Family, and Ahuru Mowai o Te Awakairangi.   Haydee has been taking stock of Safe Hutt Valley’s achievements and planning for the future.   “Once we have a full picture of all of the positive work happening in our communities we can identify what existing partnerships and structures we can link with, and how we can work better together to improve the reach of our work. We will identify any gaps in services and look at ways of pooling our resources to fill these gaps,” says Haydee.   A history graduate, Haydee is the mother of twin sons, aged five. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 11 APR 2013—Nominations are open for the 2013 Upper Hutt Young Achiever Awards.   For the ninth year running, the awards will be held during Youth Week 4 – 12 May which does not leave much time to submit nominations, required by Thursday 25 April.   Pakiwaitaratanga, Live like a Legend is the theme for Youth week 2013. The theme centres on “Look to the legends of the past to inspire you to be a legend in the present”. Be it in sport or everyday life, many of us draw upon the actions of our childhood heroes to inspire us to achieve in the activities we pursue. Most of us do not receive any recognition for our efforts and on the most part our achievements go largely unnoticed. The Young Achiever Awards provides the Upper Hutt community with the opportunity to do this, to recognize the achievements of our young people.   The big difference this year compared with previous years is the inclusion of a Mayoral Award. This category does not have set criteria and could recognize anything, such as achievement against the odds, or someone who has overcome adversity to succeed in achieving their goals. All nominees will be considered for selection under this category and Mayoral commendations may also be made.   One such person who has recently achieved against the odds is Jarrod Westrupp. Jarrod hails from Upper Hutt and started training at Naenae Boxing Academy in 2006 in an effort to get off the streets. Through his dedication and commitment, he has managed to turn his life around and was last year appointed as an Outward Bound Ambassador.   “Here in Upper Hutt we have a huge pool of uncelebrated talent and only occasionally do we actually take the time to sit back and applaud the wins of Upper Hutt young people. This is your chance to nominate a young person who you believe is worthy of greater recognition, for their efforts in whatever field, so please take a few minutes to complete a nomination form in recognition of significant effort. Additionally, you may be providing the potential award winner with a critical point of difference over other people, which could be crucial in today’s increasingly competitive environment”, says Steve Smith, Council’s Acting Senior Community Development Advisor.   Young achievers can be nominated across a variety of different categories, including Culture, Service and Leadership, in addition to the Mayoral Award. The categories are broad, so people making nominations are encouraged to think creatively about which category best fits their nominee. Previous nominations have included peer support leaders, people involved in Scouts and Stage Challenge, school leaders, volunteers at a local church or at St John’s ambulance, sports leaders or people who have given time to the community in other ways.   The nominations will be judged by six Upper Hutt representatives, each of whom brings a diverse set of skills to the judging panel. The prestigious awards ceremony, where winners and runner-ups will be presented with their awards, will be held at Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre. The event will include performances by talented local singers, dancers and musicians. Nominations for the Inspire: Young Achiever Awards close on Thursday 25 April. The ban on all outdoor fires in the Wellington region has been lifted as at 9am today (Friday 5 April).   The ban was imposed on 8 March due to an extreme fire hazard in the region. However recent rainfall and lowering temperatures has lessened the risk in the past week. The ban covered all territory in Wellington City, Hutt City, Upper Hutt City, Porirua City and the Kapiti Coast District. It included all land administered by the Department of Conservation. Upper Hutt Neighbourhood Support, Civil Defence, New Zealand Fire Service, and Upper Hutt City Council Community Development Team’s Settlement Support have joined forces to get Upper Hutt migrants disaster ready.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 05 APR 2013—Imagine you are in a country where you do not speak the language and an earthquake strikes. Your house is damaged and water and power services are not working. For people new to New Zealand the language barrier may make it even harder to manage life after a disaster. Many also do not have the support of family members or community connections.   The migrants in our community come from every continent with very different terrains and natural occurrences. Each country manages disaster in various different ways. As New Zealand is on a fault line, a number of services are very aware, proactive, and organised in comparison to countries that do not suffer these events often. People from other countries are invited to learn what local services have to offer and to learn from them how to get ready and get through.   On Wednesday 8 May at 7.00 pm, at the Upper Hutt Library, there will be an information session for newcomers to our region presented by Neighbourhood Support, Civil Defence and the New Zealand Fire Service. It will focus on being prepared in case of a natural disaster and the importance of being connected to your community.   “I think we have all learned something from the events in Christchurch”, said Settlement Support Officer, Cecilia Titulaer. “I believe it is important to get these services together to prepare the migrant community of our city in case of a disaster. The first point of contact, if something does happen, is often the people immediately around you. So getting to know who lives around you is very important.”   Peter Walker from Civil Defence reminds us that “in a disaster, the emergency services and your local council will be extremely busy. Help may be limited for up to three days. You could be without water, electricity, gas and telephones. We can’t prevent disasters but you can take some simple steps to ensure you will be able to be prepared and be able to cope. All of us must think ahead and be prepared. Storing emergency water, knowing where survival items in your house are and having a household emergency plan are key steps to take.”   “Neighbourhood Support is all about connecting neighbours and encouraging them to communicate. Upper Hutt City Council has begun consultation for its draft Annual Plan.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 04 APR 2013—For one month, Upper Hutt residents have the chance to have their say on the City Council’s Annual Plan before it is adopted in late June. The consultation period opened on Monday 2 April and will continue until 3 May. Within the consultation period residents will be able to attend a public meeting at Upper Hutt’s Central Library on 8 April at 7.00 pm as well as talk to the Mayor on the proposed projects at a Library ‘Hot Seat’ at 10.45 am the following day. Upper Hutt City Council has made all the relevant documentation available online along with dropboxes and submission forms at Council’s Civic Centre and the Central Library and The Mall on Main Street. A website dedicated to the consultation process has also been set up along with an option to make a submission online via the Council’s main website www.upperhuttcity.com. With a proposed rates increase of 3.83%, Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy is positive about the proposed Annual Plan with some reservations, “We have done our best to keep the rates increase down, recognising that we are still in a very tough economic climate. It’s now up to our residents to have their say and tell us what they think. Obviously, dropping the rates increase further will come at a cost of some of the initiatives we have proposed. But we are committed to finding the right balance—to make a way forward whilst remaining fiscally prudent.” Following the consultation period, there will be opportunity for those who wish to present their views to councillors in person. Times set aside for this are 9.00 am on 28 May and 4.30 pm on 29 May. Central Government’s decision detrimental to community, says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 26 MAR 2013—Mayor Wayne Guppy has condemned the Government’s decision to consolidate the court services of Lower and Upper Hutt. He believes that the closure of the Upper Hutt court places the community at a disadvantage and neglects the social responsibility of the community. He also questions the analysis of the impacts of the decision made by the Ministry of Justice, claiming their rationale for the Upper Hutt court’s closure lacks factual evidence.   “The Ministry of Justice needs to review their decision to close the Upper Hutt Courthouse. They have created a significant problem for a community who already pays a huge social responsibility by housing the largest prison in the region.” says Mayor Guppy. “The community of Upper Hutt was given a convenient excuse by the Ministry that the courthouse was prone to risk of damage by earthquake but the actual cost to mitigate this risk through repair was never evidenced.   The decision to merge the two courthouses has been on their agenda for many years and the Ministry has taken advantage of the temporary seismic assessment closure to actuate their plans. Now our community is left to manage the impacts of this decision, which are far more significant than the Ministry has led us to believe.”   A report of the ‘Establishment of the Hutt Valley District Court – Design Plan’ has recently been made available to the Upper Hutt City Council. This report highlights the many issues experienced by its residents in accessing the wide variety of court services. It suggests a significant number of physical and likely costly changes that need to be made to the Lower Hutt courthouse buildings to accommodate the increased volume of judicial activity, as it would now become the eighth largest in New Zealand. In addition to these changes, the Ministry now must look to fill the service gaps left by their departure from Upper Hutt City.   Ministry of Justice officials have highlighted a need to increase internet access to court proceedings. Their solution is to fund a suite of six computers in the Upper Hutt Central Library. This may seem like a generous offer; however library staff would have to be trained to show customers how to access the correct information. Coupled with this is the restriction of space within the library for its core community services, and the obvious impacts to the library environment with housing judicial services.   “Recently, one of our library team members spent over half an hour with a court client helping them to access disputes tribunal information. “ says Mayor Guppy. “These issues would be quadrupled if the Council decided to take up the Ministry of Justices computer suite offer, and local rate payers would end up footing the bill as more library staff are required to provide a service which is a direct result of a decision from a misguided Ministry.”   “The Ministry has left the community unsupported, without any consideration that some of our most vulnerable residents will simply not be able to access services because they are either internet-based or located elsewhere. The Ministry of Justice has already closed their post office box in Upper Hutt and hasn’t even redirected their mail, meaning that even the most basic form of communication with the residents of Upper Hutt has been severed. Social agencies are now asking for money to help fund support services to fill the gap that the Ministry has left. Our community now has very little faith in the Ministry of Justice.”   Mayor Guppy declined to attend the official opening of the Hutt Valley District Court on Monday. UPPER HUTT, PORIRUA, WELLINGTON, Wellington NZ, 22 MAR 2013—Today is World Water Day, and in line with this year’s theme of ‘Water Cooperation’, three of Wellington’s Mayors have decided to band together and make sure the region keeps water conservation front of mind in spite of last weekend’s much anticipated rainfall.   As well as doing their bit to save water in their own daily routines, Mayors Wayne Guppy, Nick Leggett and Celia Wade-Brown have agreed to jump into Wellington Harbour next Tuesday the 2nd of April, if the region’s water consumption can dip to an average of 125 ML per day over the course of next week.   Mayor of Upper Hutt, Wayne Guppy, says the Mayoral stunt is intended to motivate residents into continuing their efforts to conserve water.   “Basically, we’re asking the region to dig deep from Monday to Friday next week and do their best to save water. If we can get to an average of 125 ML a day, my Mayoral colleagues and I will be showing off our bombing skills somewhere on the Wellington water-front the following Tuesday morning,” Mr Guppy says.   The Mayor of Porirua, Nick Leggett, says residents’ efforts to conserve water have been commendable, but we’re not out of the woods yet.   “Over the last week or so, residents have really dug deep and achieved some great savings – at one point we were down to 113 ML which is a fantastic result, but it’s so important we keep pushing so that we don’t end up in the same position again with the dry weather forecast over the next ten days,” Mr Leggett says.   Although the heavy rain experienced last weekend was a god-send for farmers and gardeners, there is very little rain forecast over the next ten days, and river levels are dropping back again.   Mayor of Wellington, Celia Wade-Brown, says she and her Mayoral colleagues are taking the plunge in order to draw attention to how people can change the way they think about water and other resources. Mr Guppy agrees.   “This is one of the driest periods the region has seen since 1947, and it’s made Wellingtonians more aware of their water use. We need to change the perception that water is free – it costs rate-payers a lot to maintain infrastructure, supply, and treatment, and so the less we use as a matter of course, the better,” he says.   Average domestic water use in the Wellington region is somewhere between 200 and 225 litres per person per day, while Auckland and a number of other major NZ cities are reportedly using 10% or more below that.   The regional council has contingency plans for how to provide more water for a growing population, if needed, but significant long-term water savings could help to defer those projects – and the cost for ratepayers. While the cost of new water storage would depend on which of several options was developed, it is estimated to be at least $30 million and could be over $100 million.   Tips for saving water: Use a plug in the sink when preparing vegetables, washing fruit or washing dishes by hand, or place a smaller container in the sink to reduce water use Don't pre-rinse dishes before they go in the dishwasher Fill sinks and basins less full than usual Turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth, and run it at a low flow rate when on Take shorter showers, try sub-5 minutes – shaving a minute saves up to 10 litres Shower with a bucket, and use the water on your plants Recycle bath water on the garden If you have a single-flush toilet cistern, place a filled one (or two) litre plastic bottle in the cistern (with the top on), to save water with every flush. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 6 MAR 2013—Upper Hutt mayor Wayne Guppy offers strong support for a proposed extension of the Wellington airport runway as a critical step in realising the economic potential for the region.   The proposed extension, from its current 2,000m length to 2,300m, would accommodate long haul flights both to and from Asia, adding lucrative capacity to the busy commercial terminus. In addition to commercial freight, the extension could expect an increase in both Asian and European tourism, which could see an expected increase of $44 million per year, and over 300 jobs created in the sector. Better exposure to the lucrative international student market could further contribute another $70 million a year in regional benefits and another 1,200 jobs.   The current runway can accommodate the arrival of some larger aircraft but is not long enough for them to take-off with a full load, hindering the economic viability of these operations.   “Over a number of years one of the issues that continually arise is that the Wellington region is severely disadvantaged by not having a truly international airport and direct flights from Wellington into Asia and onto the rest of the world. The regional economic benefit for long haul flights to Asia with connections to Europe is very clear for everyone to see.” says Mayor Guppy. “A direct air service to Asia is arguably the most significant thing the Wellington region can do to realise its economic potential. As the seat of government, a global financial centre, a location for international events, and a widely recognised leisure destination; there is significant scope to increase international visitors through improved connectivity.”   Mayor Guppy is calling for a collective agreement to pursue the investment required to enable the extension. It is estimated that it would cost $1 million per metre of the extension of the Lyall Bay runway, and it is expected that an additional 300 metres would be required to enable large aircraft to both arrive and take-off with a maximum load; an investment Mayor Guppy suggests would be returned through on-going economic benefit throughout the Wellington Region.   “The economic benefit for the region makes the runway extension highly viable from a cost benefit perspective and is likely to be a project that would justify both private and public funding. Certainly if the private sector contributed and the public sector serviced a loan we are only looking at approximately $10M per year to service roughly a $200M loan. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 MAR 2013—Dress up and celebrate St Patrick’s day with Bike the Trail on Sunday 17 March. For the fifth year running, Upper Hutt and Hutt City Council bring you this ever popular FREE family friendly event. Get a group together and enjoy an easy, scenic bike ride down the Hutt River Trail from Upper Hutt’s Harcourt Park to Hikoikoi Reserve, Petone. Try the 2 ½ hour ride covering 25 km or the 1 hour 12 km ride from Eastern Hutt Road in Stokes Valley. Both rides start at 11 am, but riders can leave between 11 am and 12 pm to avoid congestion.   Activation Team Leader Frances McEwen says “This is a wonderful end of summer event for children and adults alike. The trail is flat and easy to bike. If you haven’t tried it already, it’s a must! Bike the Trail is free, it’s organised and so much fun. We encourage families to dress up, as it’s St Patrick’s Day, and there will be prizes for the best dressed!”   A special kids cycle-skills training workshop will be held before the event from 9.30 am at Harcourt Park featuring prizes, games and a sausage sizzle. Upper Hutt City Council Staff along with Avanti Plus, Lower Hutt will be running a cycle-skills course, and kids will also be able to take part in a ‘slow’ bike race, kit their bike out with free reflective gear and other bike accessories, have their helmets and bikes checked, and fuel up for the ride with a free sausage.   The ride will conclude with a tasty BBQ at Hikoikoi Reserve. Enjoy the afternoon with music, giveaways, and fun for the whole family. Free return transport to Stokes Valley or Upper Hutt will be available from 1.00 pm until 3.00 pm.   Registrations for this event are now open. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 MAR 2013—Upper Hutt City Council, in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council, bring Paws in the Park back to Upper Hutt this summer.   The annual Paws in the Park event is a great opportunity for dog and nature lovers alike to get together and explore the beautiful forest along Tane’s Track at Tunnel Gully.   The event will be held on Sunday 10 March from 11 am – 2 pm. Tunnel Gully is located just off SH2.  To get there, head north on Main Road North from Upper Hutt towards Rimutaka Hill, turn right at the Te Marua Store (6 km north of Upper Hutt) onto Plateau Road and follow this road until it ends at Tunnel Gully Recreation Area.   Activation Team Leader Frances McEwen says “getting out and about during summer is a great way to spend time with friends and family and keep active. Dogs are part of the family—mine definitely is!— and they love the chance to ‘socialise’ with other dogs and explore new areas. Tunnel Gully is a beautiful location and ideal for picnics, so bring your basket and a bone with you!”   After the walk, there will be dog obedience displays and a treat for all dogs who attend. Please remember to bring your dog on a lead and plastic bags to collect any dog poo! Teddy Bears Picnic to be held at Harcourt Park on Saturday, 9 March.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 MAR 2013—Every bear that ever there was, will gather at Harcourt Park because, that’s the place the Teddy Bears have their picnic.   Teddy bears and their owners, young and old alike, are invited to attend Upper Hutt’s annual Teddy Bears Picnic, at Harcourt Park on Saturday 9 March.   The popular event is a fun, family day out, running from 2 – 5 pm at Harcourt Park’s Sound Shell, featuring live entertainment, music, activities and prizes.   The event is being run by Activation, an Upper Hutt City Council team dedicated to assisting the community in becoming more active, more often.   Acting Recreation Services Manager, Rachel Jury, says the event has proven popular in the past because it caters to the needs of families with young children perfectly. “We’ve come up with a range of fun activities so there is something for everyone to be involved in,” says Ms Jury. “There will also be prizes in different categories for the best teddys, for example, the biggest, and the best dressed teddys etc.”   In the weeks leading up to the picnic, Council is running a competition in the Upper Hutt Leader called ‘Where’s Ted’. Media release | Friday, 1 March 2013 Upper Hutt residents feel safe at home

Almost everyone in Upper Hutt feels safe at home and in their neighbourhood most of the time, according to a survey commissioned by the City Council.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 01 MAR 2013—Upper Hutt City Council’s 2012 survey revealed 98% of residents feel safe in their homes and 95% feel safe in their neighbourhoods all or most of the time.    Slightly fewer feel safe in the central business district. A total of 89% feel safe in the CBD all or most of the time, but only 46% feel safe all the time.   Residents feel almost as safe on the roads. Overall, 91% are satisfied or fairly satisfied with the safety of Upper Hutt's roads, with only one in twelve saying they are definitely not satisfied with the safety of roads. Hutt Valley Police Area Commander, Inspector Mike Hill, says the survey results are consistent with trends in local crime statistics. "There has been a significant reduction in reported crimes in the Hutt Valley over recent years. The community has worked effectively with the Police and other agencies to make Upper Hutt a safer place to live." Jessica Setu, Council's Senior Advisor for Community Development, says the survey results are already shaping Council’s safety initiatives. “For example, we have programmes under way to improve safety in the CBD, reduce alcohol consumption, build resilience in our neighbourhoods and control graffiti around the city.”   The most common suggestion for improving safety was stronger police and security presence. Over the whole city almost 40% made that suggestion, but fewer people (27%) in southern suburbs called for enhanced police presence. Other suggestions included improved street lighting and security cameras. Residents in Trentham were especially interested in security cameras. Inspector Mike Hill says police have 24 hour police patrols and response. “People don't always see us when they are home at night, but we are out there every day and every night. We are there, whether you see us or not.”   Inspector Hill says there are many other ways to make suburbs safe. “What people are looking for is knowing that 'someone' is looking out for them. It’s important to know your neighbours, look out for each other, look after each other—this all assists with safety and makes us all more resilient.”   Upper Hutt also benefits from the presence of other disciplined, uniformed staff. “Criminals and those who are a risk to us on the roads shouldn't just worry about the police,” says Inspector Hill. “Defence force staff and prison staff are part of the Upper Hutt community and our Maori Wardens are out patrolling. More and more people are getting in touch with us about the activities of criminals. Crimestoppers is a great way to pass on information to us.”   Jade Mercer, Council's Road Safety Advisor, says the survey results on road safety are pleasing but confirm there is more to be done. Jade says the Council's next focus is intersections, especially where there are compulsory stop signs.   The survey was conducted by an independent research company, who interviewed 400 Upper Hutt residents aged over 18 years in March last year. UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 19 FEB 2013— Residents of Upper Hutt are enjoying their changing landscape as vibrant artworks add colour and creativity to communications cabinets across the city. Council identified the priority to eradicate graffiti in its Long Term Plan (2012-2022) and looked for cost effective ways to tackle the issue. Coincidentally, Chorus were working on cabinet artworks as a national project, and a partnership was quickly formed. The project did not fully take shape however, until The Learning Connexion joined this partnership and provided access to talented artists. Chorus provided paint and anti-graffiti coating to the project and Council funded the artists. Many students of The Learning Connexion jumped at the chance for the opportunity for exposure of their work, submitting designs to be considered for the project. The artworks were carefully selected by Chorus and Council and, in December last year, thirteen cabinets began their transformation to becoming works of art. These cabinets were all based in graffiti ‘hotspots’ and were regularly the targets of vandalism. These areas are also highly visible throughout the community, meaning that most residents have been able to see the transformation. Chorus Communications manager Kathy Wiltshire says graffiti is a community issue and is one that Chorus takes very seriously. “We are part of the community too, not just because we work in every street and neighbourhood in New Zealand, but our people also live in them. We welcome any chance to minimise graffiti wherever we can and this project has been very successful all around the country,” she said. “It has been fantastic having such a supportive council to get this project under way in Upper Hutt and seeing the artists from The Learning Connexion express their feelings for the community they live and work in.” Painting began in December in extreme heat, which impacted on the Christmas deadline however, most artists found the process enjoyable. While completing their work, some artists received great support and some interesting interactions with local residents, with many giving positive feedback.  In the weeks that have passed since painting completed, there has been great feedback and a swell of community spirit over the cabinets. Jonathan Milne, managing director of The Learning Connexion, commented that art is much more than decoration.  “It can lift the mood of a city and build a sense of identity.  Our art students also feel far more connected with the community.  It’s an outstanding win-win project.”  “The Chorus cabinets have made a great difference in our community, not only at deterring graffiti, but also in creating community pride.” says Upper Hutt City Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “I hope that we can see more of this artwork around our city and appreciate the tremendous support of both Chorus and The Learning Connexion in this project, and the talented artists who did this magnificent work.” It is hoped that the project will inspire other service providers to do the same to their cabinets, and Council is keen to talk to any agency or individual wishing to participate in a similar project in the future. A new aquatic wheelchair will dramatically improve the customer experience at H2O Xtream for swimmers with disabilities.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 13 FEB 2013—H2O Xtream patrons can now wheel their way into the pool thanks to the introduction of a new aquatic wheelchair. H2O Xtream, which is owned by Upper Hutt City Council, has been a champion of equal access for people with disabilities for several years.   Rachel Jury, Acting Manager of Recreation Services at Council, says the new wheelchair is another step towards removing barriers to access in the city’s public facilities. “We’ve been really focused on improving customer experiences for people with disabilities so we’re excited about seeing people come and make use of the chair,” she says. “We feel extremely fortunate that Experience Upper Hutt was successful in obtaining a grant from the Nikau Foundation in order for us to purchase the chair”.   The pool already has a hoist available for patrons, which it will continue to use, however the wheelchair will better meet the needs of many customers and also offers a greater sense of independence.   Upper Hutt businesswoman, Genevieve McLachlan, who has vision-impairment and uses a wheelchair for mobility support, was the one of the pool’s first regular customers to test the new aquatic wheelchair.   Ms McLachlan says the chair will be useful for a range of people with different mobility needs. “People will really appreciate the sense of independence the chair gives them, and the added convenience for those of us who are mobile enough to use a walking frame, but don’t necessarily feel safe walking on wet tiles,” she says. Ms McLachlan is a competitive sailor, and often goes Aqua Jogging to maintain her fitness levels. “I usually use the steps into the pool, but that is not easy and I don’t really like leaving my walking frame next to the pool in case it is moved or taken,” she says. “The wheelchair will be a very dignified way of getting into the pool. ”Ms McLachlan’s company offers assessments, training and products for people with disabilities that make it easier for them to do things like read print or use a computer, which means she is often sought out by community organisations that provide support and advocacy for people with disabilities to provide input on equal access issues.   Ms Jury says that feedback from customers like Ms McLachlan is enormously helpful for Council because it gives them the information they need to keep improving facilities and processes. “Even today, while she was testing out the chair, Genevieve’s ideas about the processes we have put in place to support customers in using the chair have given us important things to think about,” she says.   “That’s why the constant dialogue between H2O Xtream staff and members of the community is encouraged – People need only ask and we’ll do our best to accommodate their needs and give them the best experience possible.”   In Ms McLachlan’s case, H2O Xtream reception staff are more than happy to take care of her guide dog, Pedro, while she swims in peace. “Pedro gets quite anxious when I’m in the water and the last thing I’d want would be for him to jump in and try and save me!” she says. “Being able to leave him there and know they’ll take care of him is great.”   Ms Jury says H2O Xtream lifeguards can assist customers by helping them get in and out of the pool using the aquatic wheelchair, and retrieving it once they have discarded it in the pool. The lifeguard will then make sure the chair remains in an easily accessible part of the pool so the customer can return back to the chair and wheel themselves out.   “Any customers who think they might like to try the aquatic wheelchair should give us a call and talk to us about what their needs are and arrange a time to come in and test the chair,” says Ms Jury. “We’ll work with each customer to create a process that provides them with support while offering them as much independence as possible.”   To speak with someone at H2O Xtream about using the aquatic wheelchair, call the pool’s reception desk on (04) 527 2113. Upper Hutt City Council will ask residents their views on a range of services.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 5 FEB 2013—This year’s annual community survey will begin on Monday, 11 February 2013. The survey, which is initiated by Upper Hutt City Council, may take up to a month, concluding on Monday 11 March.   Key Research has been contracted to undertake the telephone survey on behalf of the Council.   400 people over the age of 18 will be interviewed as part of the survey. People contacted will be randomly selected from the telephone listings for Upper Hutt City. The survey will give respondents the opportunity to share their views on a range of services that Council delivers, and to comment on where improvements can be made.   “This information helps the Council to identify ways to better meet the needs of the Upper Hutt community,” says Upper Hutt Mayor, Wayne Guppy. “It forms an important part of Council’s accountability to the community. If you receive a call, please take the time to answer the questions.”   Key Research will be calling people between Monday 11 February and Monday, 11 March 2013.   The survey results will measure the Council’s performance against the majority of targets outlined in the Long Term Plan 2012 – 2022. Media release | Friday, 25 January 2013 Orongomai Marae Open Day celebrates Waitangi

Once again, Upper Hutt’s Orongomai Marae will be open to the public for Waitangi celebrations on 6 February.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 25 JAN 2013—Upper Hutt’s Orongomai Marae invites the community to celebrate Waitangi at its Open Day on Wednesday 6 February. The community will be invited onto the marae with a stunning traditional welcoming ceremony, followed by all day entertainment and activities. This free event begins at 9.00 am and concludes around 2.00 pm, and provides a great outing for all ages.   There will be a traditional powhiri welcoming ceremony at 9.00 am. The powhiri begins with the karanga, the keening voices of women calling to each other from both the visiting group and the hosts. It is followed by a wero (challenge) performed by a warrior. This is followed by a chant and dance of welcome and exchange of greetings—an experience not to be missed.   Another highlight of the event is the traditional hangi meal that is buried and cooked on the marae grounds. Tickets for a hangi meal can be pre-purchased from the Marae office during normal working hours or on the day.   This year’s event has two similar themes “E Tu Ōrongomai” (Marae standing up to violence) and “Kia tau te rangimarie ki runga i Ōrongomai” (To be peaceful on Ōrongomai). A subsidy is being offered by Upper Hutt City Council to initial takers of the city’s new nappy composting service.   UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 18 JAN 2013—The first 100 families who purchase Envirocomp’s nappy composting bags this year will receive a $1.00 subsidy for each bag purchased. Not only can families save up to $26, but they can also do their part to protect our local environment.   Council is offering the subsidy to encourage parents to make the environmentally responsible choice when disposing of nappies and other sanitary products.   The service is simple: register with Envirocomp to pre-purchase a pack of bags, and when they are full, drop them off at the Upper Hutt collection point in the PAK'nSAVE car park on Gibbons Street. Customers will receive an access card for the disposal bin with their first purchase.   The nappies, sanitary, and incontinence products are then composted with green waste using Hot-Rot patented technology. The end product is pathogen free and can be used for non-food agriculture purposes.   Envirocomp are a rapidly growing Christchurch-based company that developed this world-first nappy, sanitary and incontinence product composting technology.   Last year Envirocomp built its second plant in Upper Hutt, extending their services to the greater Wellington region.   Envirocomp’s Managing Director Karen Upston says the use of Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHPs) is increasing around the world.   “Unfortunately, increased use brings increased waste from such products going to landfill. Media release | Tuesday, 5 January 2013 Bring your dog to Upper Hutt's Paws in the Park 2013

Upper Hutt City Council, in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council, bring Paws in the Park back to Upper Hutt this summer.   The annual Paws in the Park event is a great opportunity for dog and nature lovers alike to get together and explore the beautiful forest along Tane’s Track at Tunnel Gully.   The event will be held on Sunday 10 March from 11am – 2pm. Tunnel Gully is located just off SH2.  To get there, head north on Main Road North from Upper Hutt towards Rimutaka Hill, turn right at the Te Marua Store (6 km north of Upper Hutt) onto Plateau Road and follow this road until it ends at Tunnel Gully Recreation Area.   Activation Team Leader Frances McEwen says “getting out and about during summer is a great way to spend time with friends and family and keep active. Dogs are part of the family -  mine definitely is! -  and they love the chance to ‘socialise’ with other dogs and explore new areas. Tunnel Gully is a beautiful location and ideal for picnics, so bring your basket and a bone with you!” After the walk, there will be dog obedience displays and spot prizes for those who attend. Please remember to bring your dog on a lead and plastics bags to collect any dog poo! The track is suitable for single mountain buggies, so bring the kids.   If the event is cancelled for any reason it will be broadcast on Newstalk ZB. The event begins at 11am, with the walk commencing at approximately 11.30am.
